What we do

What does a web development company in San Diego actually do?

A web development company builds the working parts of your website: the pages, the online store, the editing system and the speed. Design decides how a site looks, and development makes it load, work and keep working.

A site that looks finished is not the same as a site that works.
Most owners only ever see the first half. They approve a homepage picture and assume the rest takes care of itself. Then the contact form quietly stops sending. The checkout breaks on one kind of phone. Nobody on the team can change a price without calling someone.
So we build the part you never see with the same care as the part you do. You get a site your own team can run.

Platforms

Web design or web development: which one does your business need?

Most businesses need both, and they get the best result from one team. Design is how your site looks and how people find their way around it, while development is how it loads, works and gets edited.
Hiring them separately is where projects stall. The designer hands over a picture. The developer builds something close to it. Nobody owns the gap in between.

This page is about the build: the parts that load, work and get edited.

So one team plans both halves, and the person shaping a page knows how it will be built.

Services

Which web development services do we offer in San Diego?

We offer six web development services in San Diego: custom builds, online stores, editing systems, speed work, platform moves and care after launch. Each one is scoped and quoted before work begins.

Custom websites and web apps

Built around how your business actually works. Booking rules, quote forms, member areas and full web applications, the parts a ready-made theme cannot do.

Online stores

Product pages, a checkout people trust, and payments that land in your account. We build on Shopify and on WordPress with WooCommerce, and our guide to Shopify vs WooCommerce helps you choose.

A site your team can edit

We set up the editing side so your staff can change text, photos and whole pages without calling a developer.

Speed

Pages that show up fast and stay still while they load, checked against Google's own targets before launch.

Platform moves

Moving off an old platform without throwing away the Google traffic you built. We run dedicated moves from Magento to WordPress and from Magento to Shopify.

Care after launch

Updates, backups, security checks and fixes once the site is live, through our website maintenance and security service. format.

Custom or template

When does a San Diego business need custom web development?

You need custom web development when your business does something a template cannot: special booking rules, product options, or a link to software you already use. If your site is mostly text, photos and a contact form, a well-built template is usually the smarter spend.
Templates are not the enemy. They cost less, launch sooner, and suit plenty of San Diego businesses.
They start costing you when you bend them. A restaurant wants bookings tied to its real tables. A clinic needs each form to reach the right person. A store sells one shirt in twelve sizes. Every workaround adds another add-on, and every add-on is one more thing that can break.
So we ask what the site has to do before we talk about how it looks. If a template does the job, we say so, and the quote gets smaller.
Cost and timeline

What moves the cost and the timeline of a website build?

Five things move both the price and the timeline: page layouts, ready words and photos, store size, connected systems, and moving an old site. We quote every build at fixed scope before work begins, so you see the number before anything starts.
Here is what each one does to a quote.
WHAT CHANGES SMALLER, QUICKER JOB BIGGER, LONGER JOB WHY IT MOVES THE QUOTE
Page layouts A few page types, reused Many one-off layouts Each new layout is built and tested on its own
Words and photos Ready on day one Still to be written or shot A build stalls while pages wait for words
Online store No store, or a few products Hundreds of products with options Every product option is set up and checked
Connections A contact form and email Booking, stock or accounting systems Each link to another system is built, then tested both ways
Your old site Starting fresh Moving an established site Every old page address needs a new home, or the traffic it earned is lost

We do not publish prices on this site. Two builds with the same page count can be very different jobs, so a number without a scope tells you very little.

For the wider picture, our guide to what a website costs walks through how agencies price this work and what a fair contract includes.

How long does it take to build a website?

It turns on the same five things. A site with ready words and no store moves much faster than a large store leaving an old platform. Ask for the timeline in writing with any quote, ours included.

Platform moves

Can you move my site to a new platform without losing my Google rankings?

Usually, yes, as long as every old page address forwards to its new one and nothing useful gets deleted. Expect some movement for a few weeks while Google catches up.
Launching a new site is not the same as keeping your Google traffic.

Moves usually go wrong in a boring way. The new site launches. The old addresses lead nowhere. Every page Google had learned to trust disappears overnight.

Google’s own guide to site moves says to map each old address to its new one and forward it permanently. It also warns that search visibility may move around during the switch, and that a medium-sized site can take a few weeks or more before Google shows the new addresses.

So we build that map first, before the new pages exist, and test every forward before launch day.

Speed

How fast should a business website load?

Google’s targets are for the main content to appear within 2.5 seconds and for the page to react to a tap in under 0.2 seconds. Nothing on the page should jump around while it loads, either.
Google says pages that meet these targets line up with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. The person holding the phone cares more. They tap your link, wait, and tap back if nothing shows.
Slow sites are usually slow for ordinary reasons. Huge photos. Too many add-ons. A pile of code nobody uses any more.
So we check the site against Google’s targets before launch, and again after any big change.
Freelancer or agency

Should you hire a freelance web developer in San Diego or an agency?

Hire a freelance web developer for a small, clear job that needs one skill. Hire an agency when the site needs design, building, words and search work together, and you want someone to call in two years.
Plenty of good San Diego web developers work alone, and for the right job they are the better choice. One fix. One new page. An update to a site that already works.
The risk is everything living in one person’s head and one person’s accounts. When they move on, the logins can go with them.
That is why we keep your domain, analytics, Search Console and ad accounts in your name, whoever ends up building the site.
How to hire

How do you choose a web development agency in San Diego?

Ask five plain questions before you sign, and judge the answers rather than the pitch. Any agency worth hiring will answer all five in writing.

Whose name are the domain and the accounts in?

It should be yours. If it is theirs, leaving gets expensive.

Can I see three sites you built that are still live?

Open them on your phone, not a big screen.

What exactly is in the quote, and what costs extra?

Writing, photos, extra rounds of changes and the move from your old site are the usual surprises.

How will you move my old pages without losing my Google traffic?

You want a written plan with a list, not a reassurance.

Who do I call when something breaks after launch?

Get a name, not a ticket number.

Ask us the same five, and hold us to the answers. Our portfolio is the place to start on question two.

Who builds it

Who handles your San Diego web development project?

Your San Diego web development project is handled by the HYER Studios team of developers, designers and strategists. The studio was founded in May 2020 by Brian Esper, who co-founded Frends Beauty in 1996 and Stilazzi Cosmetics in 2008.

Brian has been selling online since 2000, when he took Frends Beauty online and grew it from one store in North Hollywood into customers across the US and abroad.
He also hired agencies for development, search and ads for years before starting one. He has sat on the owner’s side of the desk, paying for this work rather than selling it.

Across the team, HYER has built more than 700 websites.

That is why every build here starts with what the site has to earn, not how it should look.

After launch

What happens after launch, and who handles website maintenance?

After launch, a website needs regular updates, backups and security checks, or it slowly breaks. We offer website maintenance in San Diego as an ongoing service, so the studio that built your site can keep it running.
Websites rarely break all at once. An add-on stops getting updates. A form stops sending. A security patch sits unapplied for months.
None of it shows on the homepage until a customer tells you.

Our web maintenance and security services cover updates, backups, security monitoring, bug fixes and a monthly report. Problems get caught before your customers find them.

Ownership

Who owns the domain and the accounts when the project ends?

You do, from day one. Your domain, analytics, Search Console and ad accounts stay in your name, not ours.
It sounds obvious until you try to leave an agency that registered your domain in its own name.
So we set the accounts up in your name before the build starts. If you ever leave, you take them with you.
FAQ

What else do San Diego businesses ask about web development?

These are the questions San Diego owners ask before a website build. If yours is not here, ask it on the call.

Do you only build websites for San Diego businesses?

No. San Diego is home, but most of a build happens online, so we also take on projects elsewhere in the US. See how our website development company works nationally.

Both. We build on WordPress, including WooCommerce stores, and on Shopify. If you are unsure which suits you, our guide to WordPress vs Shopify sets out the trade-offs.

Online stores, healthcare and real estate businesses, along with San Diego clients such as Princess Pub & Grille and USA Veterans Empowered. We ask how your customers buy before we plan a single page.
Yes. Search is planned into the build, not bolted on afterwards. If you want ongoing search work after launch, our San Diego SEO company team can take it from there.
